Kate Middleton has spoken openly about her cancer diagnosis and treatment over the past year. What’s been less reported on is the support she’s received from her young daughter, Princess Charlotte. According to royal expert Ingrid Seward, Charlotte has taken on a protective role for her mother as she continues to battle cancer.
Seward spoke to Hello magazine about the close bond between Kate and Charlotte. She described how the nine-year-old has been attentive and caring towards her mother during her recovery. This protective nature was on display during Trooping the Colour in June 2024. Charlotte stood in front of Kate as they watched the parade from the Buckingham Palace balcony. “I think that Charlotte is really taking care of her mom. It was quite sweet the way she stood in front of her during the parade and they kept chatting,” said Seward.
Kate and Charlotte are said to share a very precious mother-daughter relationship. Kate herself has spoken of how close she is with her own mother, Carol Middleton. It’s clear the maternal bond is very important to Kate. So it’s no surprise that Charlotte would want to support her mother through her cancer treatment.
As the second child and only daughter of Prince William and Kate, Charlotte has already taken on more responsibilities within the royal family. She’s often seen watching over and caring for her younger brother, Prince Louis, during public events. Charlotte has even been caught on camera gently correcting Louis or reminding her older brother Prince George of proper royal etiquette. These displays suggest protective and nurturing behavior come naturally to Princess Charlotte.
However, her actions towards Kate could also stem from emulating her mother’s excellent example. Kate Middleton has proven herself to be one of the most respected senior royals since marrying into the family in 2011. She’s been a model of poise, grace and dedication. So it follows that Charlotte would want to help and look after her mother, as she’s no doubt learned from Kate’s own compassion and strength.
In a June 2024 Instagram post, Kate provided an update on her cancer treatment and recovery. She admitted chemotherapy is an ongoing process, with both good and bad days still to come over the next few months. On better days, Kate said she tries to engage with her children’s school life from home or do light work. But she’s also accepting the need to rest her body on worse days.
Kate concluded by saying she’s learning patience, taking each day as it comes, and listening to what her body needs. Her positive yet realistic message about the ups and downs of recovery struck an inspiring chord with many. It also gave insight into the challenges she continues to face behind closed doors in Windsor, where Kate resides with William and their children.
In a previous video statement when Kate first revealed her cancer diagnosis, she’d said preventative chemotherapy was recommended after abdominal surgery in January 2024. However, royal expert Katie Nicholl later disclosed Kate initially struggled with the treatment. Speaking to The Sun, Nicholl said sources close to the Princess relayed she’d found it difficult at first.
