Football and fashion go way back. On one side, you’ve got big time footballers who are known for their style – David Beckham, Hector Bellerin, Dominic Calvert-Lewin et al. On the other, there’s fashion trends inspired by the sport, like #Blokecore and #Ladcore. Whenever they’re doing the rounds on TikTok and Instagram – where else? – you’ll start seeing the fashion crowd swanning about in team shirts they almost definitely have no connection to (the Man United shirt in my wardrobe is proof enough).
For 2025, though, it’s not football shirts which are top of the agenda. Instead, it’s football boots. The trend’s been bubbling for a couple of years, with Wales Bonner and Martine Rose dropping various sneakers which take inspo from the pitch – but now, it’s reached another level. Nike has reissued the Total 90 (one of the most iconic football boots from the noughties) as a sneaker, while Pharrell Williams dropped an entire collection of Louis Vuitton football trainers. Just search #BootsOnlySummer on TikTok to see the hype for yourself.
The latest guy to jump on the trend is Justin Bieber. Over the past few days, the Daisies singer has been dropping photos of a new football-inspired silhouette by his own-brand Skylrk. It looks like an EVA rubber sneaker that’s one part Yeezy, one part Adidas Predator (fold-over tongue included) – almost how football boots might look in a few decades time. So far, he’s posted a cream colourway (which has also been worn by Hailey, and is reminiscent of Beckham’s Predator Manias from 2002) as well as pink and kiddie sizes, but they’ve not officially dropped online so it’s not guaranteed which will make it to market.
It’s all very on-brand for Biebs and his label. There’s no big launch. No official press release or buzzy advertising campaign. Just like the brand itself, which he announced on IG last month with the post ‘Soooooo exciteddddddd for @skylrk’ after teasing pieces ever since December 2023, it’s all about building hype with an IYKYK mindset. And, it works. His first collection of sculptural neon sunnies, cloud-like slides and bright beanies was a sell out, so it’s pretty certain these will be too.
If you want to be in with a chance of getting some yourself, sign up to the mailing list so you can beat the Beliebers to it as soon as they drop. While you wait, maybe one of our favourite football-boot inspired sneakers below will do.
