Julia Roberts was in Paris tonight, where she was awarded an honorary Cesar during the 50th ceremony of the French equivalent of the Oscars.
It was announced by the Cesar Academy in September that the legendary actress and her career would be celebrated on this occasion.
A few hours before the ceremony, Roberts was also awarded the insignia of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Minister of Culture.
This distinction is a prestigious award that recognizes artists who have had a significant impact on the arts.
The star of Erin Brockovich, Pretty Woman, Notting Hill and Ocean’s Eleven joins an illustrious list of actors who were also given this award, including Meryl Streep, Tom Cruise and Cate Blanchett.
In September, the Cesar Academy said in a press release, “It is a with a great admiration that we will be awarding Julia Roberts an honorary Cesar on the stage of the Olympia theater.
Julia Roberts is not just a movie star, but she is also a cultural icon and her influence goes far beyond her performances.”
Her co-star in Closer and Duplicity, Clive Owen, presented the award. In his speech, Owen said, “Julia has an incredible body of work, she has a connection with the audience full of intelligence, warmth and honesty and still remains fiercely independent.”
He added: “She is often said of having great chemistry with her co-actors because she makes them better. I know this on a personal level.”
Owen ended by calling Roberts, “One of the best, nicest and funniest actresses of our time.”
After a rapturous standing ovation inside the Olympia theater, Roberts began her speech and thanked iconic French actress Catherine Deneuve for being born and making the world of cinema a better place.
She then said, “My incredible daughter told me to write a speech but I have never written a speech about me, it was quite complex. I wrote one but I left it at my hotel.”
Roberts expressed how grateful she felt to have been able to pursue her career and her dream of being an actress for so many years, and thanked her close friends and family, her children and her husband.
She finished her speech by quoting the famous children song Row, Row, Row Your Boat, and said, “Merrily, merrily, merrily. Life is but a dream, thank you!”.
