Mandelson-Epstein latest: Gordon Brown contacts police with ‘relevant information’ after leaked emails
Former prime minister Gordon Brown has written to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner with information as the force opens an investigation into claims Lord Mandelson disclosed “market-sensitive and confidential government information” to paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
The former British ambassador to the US announced he was stepping down from the House of Lords, after prime minister Sir Keir Starmer threatened legislation within weeks to strip him of his title.
Lord Mandelson, who was business secretary in Mr Brown’s government, is facing police scrutiny after the Cabinet Office reported material to detectives after seeing the latest Epstein files.
Downing Street suggested that “safeguards were compromised”, and Sir Keir told his cabinet he was appalled at the emails between Mandelson and Epstein, saying the peer had let his country down.
Meanwhile, new revelations about Sarah Ferguson and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor have also emerged in the documents.
An email to Epstein from a sender called Sarah, believed to be the former Duchess of York, reads: “No woman has ever left the royal family with her head, and the [sic] cannot behead me, therefore they will discredit me.”
