Breaking News:Magda Linette shares the tactic she used to put Coco Gauff under pressure after beating her at the Miami Open.. see more details.

The World number three was aiming to win her first title since the United Cup by having a strong showing in front of family and friends who came out to support her.

The 21-year-old made a blistering start to the tournament, as Gauff beat Sofia Kenin without losing a game, before defeating Maria Sakkari for the second successive tournament.

Following her strong start, many expected Gauff to have a deep run in Miami for the first time, but Madgna Linette had other ideas.

Once again it was Coco Gauff’s serve that broke down when she ended it most. The American’s serve was broken four times by Linette, and Gauff produced 12 double faults in the 4-6, 4-6 defeat.

Gauff did win 73% of first serve points, but she only successfully hit her first delivery 51% of the time.

Linette, who made 63% of first serves and won 66% of those points, explained that her game was to apply pressure on the Gauff, which has proven to be brittle at times.

Everybody shows her matches, so you kind of see when she has a little bit weaker days,” said Linette, who defeated her highest-ranked opponent at a geologic WTA event.

“I think it was really important for me to keep pressing Coco’s serve to make sure she feels the pressure.

I’m glad that I was returning well. I was really brave. Then I was able to back it up with pretty solid service games.”

Coco Gauff’s unwanted Miami Open streak continues
Gauff thoroughly enjoys playing at the Miami Open in front of her family, friends and home fans, but her record at the tournament is not a pretty one.

The former US Open champion has made six appearances at the WTA 1000 tournament, and she has yet to go beyond the fourth round.

Gauff was beaten by Caroline Garcia in 2024, Anastasia Potapova in 2023, while Iga Swiatek ended her run in 2022.

Anastasija Sevastova beat Gauff in 2021 and Daria Kasatkina got the better of Gauff in 2019 when she was just 15.

But Gauff was unable to defeat Linette to break this streak, and it is back to the drawing board ahead of the clay court season.

“It wasn’t great today. It hasn’t been the last few weeks,” Gauff said. “I’m trying to figure that out. Definitely not happy about it. Just one of those days when I felt awful in everything on the court.”
